Coaches Round Table

How many coaches have coached the team for which they played?

I was at the Sacramento Kings game last night, and their coach -- Reggie Theus -- used to play for the Kings. In fact, he scored the very first basket for them after their move to Sacramento! So, it got me to wondering what other coaches played for the team they coach or coached.

  3. Don Shula - Baltimore Colts
  4. I know from baseball and football that it is a huge number. Right now in MLB, these managers have played for the team they maanage Chicago White Sox Ozzie Guillén Detroit Tigers Jim Leyland New York Yankees Joe Girardi Atlanta Braves Bobby Cox (was on their major league roster, but never played) Milwaukee Brewers Ned Yost New York Mets Willie Randolph ad there are a LOT of former players who have done this in the past - even including current managers Bruce Bochy, Dusty Baker, Lou Piniella, Joe Girardi have all done this in the past Just off the top of my head, Mike Ditka did it with the Bears, ah... I am out of time
  5. I tried to look everywhere, but it was extremely tough finding a list of former player/coaching for the same team combinations. Digging on my own, I found a few more, aside from Reggie Theus. Don Mattingly (First baseman/, Jerry West (player and head coach for the LA Lakers) , and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (player and special assistant coach for the LA Lakers). Some more were Cap Anson, Joe Cronin, Connie Mack, John McGraw, Tris Speaker, Frank Robinson, and Lou Boudreau. HOWEVER, the most interesting manager/player was Joe Torre. Torre played for the NY Mets/St. Louis Cardinals/Atlanta braves and also was the manager for the NY Mets/St. Louis Cardinals/Atlanta Braves. Hope that satiates your curiousity a bit! =)
