Any ideas of characters for a couple to go as to a cartoon character costume party?

We're having a cartoon character costume party and the missus and I need ideas for a couple to go as. They don't need to be husband and wife type characters, just 2 that go together well. Any ideas? We'd like to make them rather than buy them but don't mind buying them if a good enough suggestion is put forward. They have to be not too impossible to make though. I've never been on Blue Peter.
