Coaches Round Table

A list of college coaches that went on to become good pro coaches?

There was a question bashing petrino, and someone mentioned college coaches never make good pro coaches. I was thinking about it, and the only names I could come up with were Dick Vermeil, Paul Brown, and John Mckay. It's getting late, and I can't remember if Robinson was good or not in the pros. Johnson is a good one. Switzer, too.

  1. A prime example and probably the most successful one was Jimmie Johnson who went from Miami U. to coach the Dallas Cowboys to a Super Bowl title. He's the only modern day example I can think of.
  2. How about Jimmie Johnson with the Hurricanes and then Cowboys"?
  3. How about Shula...we was a defensive back coach for the University of Kentucky in 1959...I would say he turned out pretty good being he is the only one to have a perfect season...and I responed to the question about College coaches suck check it out
  4. The only one I can think of is Jimmy Johnson. John Robinson was not very good in the pros. That is why the Rams fired him. Also, John McKay was responsible for the only winless team in the Super Bowl era, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barry Switzer was given a team that Johnson built and he set on cruise control to win the Super Bowl. That was evidence the following year when all the legal trouble surfaced and Dallas fell apart right in front of us.
  5. Jimmie Johnson sticks out because he not only won the NCAA championship in college with Miami,he also won two super bowls with the Cowboys, for the most part, college coaches do not fare well in the pros,Steve Spurrier for example was a great college coach in Florida, but a big failure with the Washington Redskins, now he's back doing good in the college ranks with the South Carolina Gamecocks
  6. Joe gibbs
  7. Bill walsh was head coach at stanford before the 49'ers. John Mckay was hired to coach an old school exspansion tampa team before the league started giving exspansion teams like Carolina, jax, and the rest big breaks with extra 1st round draft picks. to help ensure they had good teams in the new cities within 5 years
  8. Jimmie Johnson is the only one I can think of as far as head coaches go. Butch Davis was a pretty successful defensive coordinator at Miami and Dallas as well following Jimmie around before returning to Miami to head coach them close to the National Title game. The U!
  9. Jimmy Johnson, yes. Barry Switzer, no. He won a championship with Johnson' team. He was "fired" the next year when things fell apart. I could have coached that team to a Super Bowl...honestly.
  10. Barry Switzer the best OU coach so far but Bob is catching up with him
