Volunteering Overseas With Teaching Knowledge Base

Where can I volunteer to teach english as a second language locally? I'm interesting in getting some experience teaching english before I go abroad later this summer, but everything I see is for Americans to volunteer overseas, etc. Does anyone know of some organization I can volunteer with locally? Local being Texas.
Would you like to volunteer with VIN TEACHING ENGLISH IN MONASTERIES ? TEACHING ENGLISH IN MONASTERIES Teach English to Buddhist Monks program has been designed for volunteers, especially those interested in Buddhists' Culture. VIN can provide longer and shorter periods upon request of the volunteers. Volunteers will teach English to the monks, both young and adults, for around two to three hours per day. In turn, the monks will share their knowledge and culture they have gained with the volunteers. Daily meditation practice, as well as fieldtrips to Hindu and Buddhist holy sites, will be included. Before volunteers leave for the site, they will be given intensive language classes and teacher training everyday. The volunteers can choose between Nepali and the language of the monastery-Sherpa, Lama, etc. The monks are able to speak both languages; it is therefore really a matter of the volunteer's preference. However, most overseas people find Nepali easier to learn. During their language and cultural classes, the volunteers will be taken to the holy
Sponsorship for overseas volunteer work? I live in Australia and next year I want to take part in a gapbreak program where i am placed in Kenya to do volunteer work, such as teaching english and building schools, however it is quite expensive and I was wondering if i could apply for sponsorship, and if i could, where? and if any airlines would help me out with a ticket, because i also have to pay for airfares.
Is there any way for me to volunteer overseas- specifically taiwan, to teach english during summer? Hi, I'm currently in grade 10 [living in Canada]. I would like to know if there are any overseas volunteer programs to teach English during the summer, with a specific location being Taiwan. If there are please list a website or a place with info for me to check out all the details! And also, it would be great if it was for a "non-profitable" organization because that's one of the requirements for my community hours. THANK YOU!!! Also, it'd be wonderful if the plane ticket and/or hotel stay was paid for.
Can you help me find an opportunity to volunteer overseas? I've been investigating options to volunteer abroad (teaching English in Latin America) for 4-8 weeks in the summer. All the organizations I've found on line require you to pay (a lot of money in some cases). While I understand the principle behind having to pay to volunteer, I can't afford it because I'm a single parent. I am also highly qualified (with a master's degree in EFL/ESL) and teach full time during the school year at a community college in the US. Does anyone know of any organizations through which I could volunteer to teach English abroad without paying a fee? If you read the third line of my question it clearly states that I HAVE looked on line (or 'on the web') and have only found organizations which require you to pay
I want to teach overseas. Has anyone heard of or experienced themselves a creditable program? I do not have a specific country in mind, I would prefer to go to a Spanish speaking country to learn the language. I do not want to volunteer. Somehow I would like to be reimbersed with either pay from the school or free housing...not quite sure...I need helping searching because there are SO MANY different web-sites and so many links to click on. HHHHEEEELLLPPPP!!!!! Any suggestions?
I need help finding an overseas volunteer program that isn't as picky as the Peace Corp.? I am mid-twenties, have the ablility to be debt free or at least suspend my student loan payments upon depature with an exception, fine physical health, I graduated college, I have worked for several years, and have alot of experience working with kids, teaching, church work, etc. Upon looking at volunteer oppurtunies, it seems you have to be quite elite for Peace Corps (which I am not, average GPA, not tons of extracurriculars, only a bit of sucky Spanish). And I don't have several thousand dollars lying around to pay someone else to take me on as a volunteer. And yet I am willing to give up a year or two to go overseas, make a difference, do whatever. I am not freaked out by manual labor. Are there any options for me. My only request is that it not be evangelizing. The program can be through a church or religious organization, I have no problem with that, but I want to do service. Help?
Volunteering abroad? I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with cadip.org or unitedplanet.org for volunteering abroad, or if anyone has recommendations for programs for volunteering overseas. Please don't suggest teach English types as I've already looked into that. Thanks!
HELP! Teaching English need lesson plan ideas.? I am about to start teaching 8 adults from Poland (a mix of beginners and intermediates) who work at a health spa (massages, skin etc) I have a 60min class in which I must determine who are beginners and who are intermediates as to divide the groups. I also must teach them something that will help them with their career (if they had english customers) so a mixture of customer service and spa related terms I guess. I am only new at teaching ESL as I am volunteering overseas, my only real plus is that i am a native speaker. Does anyone know any sites that may help me plan this initial lesson, that is, to help me get started? Or does anyone have any tips? I hope to hear from you,
High School overseas volunteer opportunities during Winter Break that don't cost much? I want to volunteer in a different country when I'm 16 for two weeks (during winter break for high school). What are some organizations that offer programs like this for a low cost? I love teaching, working with children, and I speak Spanish.
What organizations send teens on overseas volunteer projects? My son needs to do some community service for his character development and for college applications. I thought it would be great if he built a school in a Spanish speaking community. It would teach him construction skills and to value education and help him with his Spanish speaking skills and shift his focus onto others.
Should I go back to university? I am considering studying teaching this year. I got accepted, but I'm really not sure if it's something I want to do. It's a 1.5 year course, and quite expensive. I'm not sure if my heart is in it or not, and I'm worried that it is a sign I'm not ready for it yet. I do have an interest in doing it, but I just don't have a "go for it" feeling about it now. Is this likely to change if I just start it? My long term girlfriend is waiting on finding out whether she has been accepted into a course overseas. There is the chance to go traveling with her for a few months if I decide not to go back to uni this year. I'd like to do this considering it could be the last time I see her cos I can't move with her, but can't really count 100% on it, and don't have much planned for the rest of the year. I could possibly use it to do some volunteer teaching to see if I enjoy it, and it might give me the chance to apply for scholarships for the course. But, if we can't travel I'd be really directionles If it makes a difference, I have studied before and completed a humanities degree. I know that teaching is not the most lucrative career but the idea of it does interest me, I'm just not sure about it. I'm kind of nervous about the prospect of getting up in front of a class, I feel that I would be too nervous. A problem is that there might be a chance I wouldn't get in again next year (although I got pretty good marks from the same university), but just the small risk has me a bit worried.
What job should I do? Since graduating in 2005 I have spent time travelling and working in various jobs (please see my CV attached). I have a lot of ideas about things I want to do and achieve, but have been reluctant to follow a particular path fully for fear of closing off others. As a result I haven't progressed in jobs, rather remained static and moved around different organisations on a similar level. I'm not 'career driven' in the typical sense, so career progression for me is less about working my way into a senior position, and more about realising my potential, experiencing new things, learning and contributing to society. The following things are important to me in a job: Variety - this is really important. I don't want to remain static in a job, and I really dislike routine. I like experiencing new things; achieving something and then moving onto the next. This is the main reason that I've not fulfilled my ambitions since graduation, even though I've had options to progress higher in almost every job I've had. I feel like committing to a path will cut off others. And geographical variety is important too, not just variety of the work I'm doing. I don't like being sat in front of a computer all day doing repetitive tasks. I really enjoy travel, seeing new places, learning about different cultures, meeting new people. Working abroad or being in a job that involves international travel would be good. Altruism - I don't see a job as a means to money alone. I need money to live (obviously) and I do want to be more than comfortable financially, but I want to feel like I've achieved something positive with my day - not just making money for people. I enjoy working with people and helping individuals, but I’m not sure if that type of career (e.g. social work) would meet my needs. I imagine that, again, I’d feel tied down to one path, to a specific ‘career’. I feel like I may be happier achieving things on a bigger scale, that help lots of people. Public sector or charity work appeals to me more than the private sector for this reason. However, I get very frustrated by bureaucracy and I'm attracted by the freedom and potential to achieve that the private sector offers. Creativity – I feel like a creative job would stimulate me far more than the opposite (though I am quite an analytical person). I like writing, and I have a lot of ideas. People – Ironically the jobs that I’ve enjoyed most have been the worst match to my ambitions. E.g. a call centre in Australia and admin work at Greene King. This is because the people I’ve worked with quickly became friends, and the working environment was very social. Here are some of the jobs/career paths I’m considering: Journalism – magazine journalism, BBC etc International development/politics – working for an MP, civil service Charity work (e.g. lobbyist, researching) – Oxfam, Amnesty International etc Post graduate study (e.g. MA in Politics) Research (e.g. doctorate) Teaching English as a foreign language International work (e.g. UN, disaster recovery) Volunteering overseas (e.g. VSO – teaching, community development projects) Writer (books, plays, poetry etc), travel writer, columnist Business analysis (my degree was in Information Systems. I don’t really enjoy this type of work and so haven’t pursued it) Working with young or disadvantaged children (e.g. duke of Edinburgh style outdoor trips) Starting a business There are aspects of most of these professions that appeal to me, and some of them I definitely want to achieve at some point (i.e. starting a business, writing, studying a masters, volunteering abroad). However, there’s not really one career path that stands out above the rest, and I’m not sure what the best direction to go in is at this point in my career. Can you recommend any career paths/jobs that would suit my aspirations? Do you have any advice about how to resolve my fears about not pursuing potentially interesting paths? Can you advise me on the most logical/best career move at this stage, which would allow me to gain a wide breadth of experience and then to specialise or move into different areas in the future? I think it’s important that I don’t waste time in jobs that don’t contribute anything to my goals/CV: is there a logical job type that would allow me to build up useful experience while I’m working out what to do longer-term, and that might help me decide this? Perhaps TEFL?
How can I get a real professional job ? I have two University Degrees - one in History and the other in Sociology - I have a Diploma in counselling. The two fields that I concentrate the most on are social services and education as I have experience working in both group homes and schools. Its just so hard to get one of these jobs. Right now I am even volunteering my time as a business consultant so I can put that on my resume. I am willing to work in alot of professional areas but no one gives me a chance - areas such as project management, being an instructor in a corportation. If I stay in the factory job I am in then no one will hire me when they see that on my resume. Please give me some ideas and places I can go. I am 36 and the best job I got was teaching english overseas in korea - the rest was over here in canda - educational ASSISTANT with special needs - group home worker - SUPPORT worker. I am tired of selling myself short - someone please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How can I volunteer overseas (for free)? I'm a 18 year old guy from Ottawa Canada, and I'm taking the year off "to discover myself." I'll be going to college the September of 2009. Instead of spending the time from now until September 'working'/doing nothing, I want to enroll in a program that lets me travel abroad (don't care where) and do some kind of work there (ie teaching, building etc) And obviously I know it's unrealistic to expect to pay nothing for volunteering overseas but I want to keep the costs minimal (as college is expensive). And if it helps I'll be 19 in a few months (I know many agencies don't accept people as young as me). I've talked to a few agencies that will let me work overseas but I have to pay about $2000 (that doesn't seem right, I work and I pay them!) Any people out there on the 'internets' with positive past experience with this kind of things?
Is it possible Teaching English with no degree but experience? Well im about to finish my BA in school right now. However I would like to work overseas as an English teacher as well, maybe during breaks. Is it even possible to teach without a degree? I already have tons of experience in a TESOL environment, volunteer work in a high school in the US, and an internship/study program in a school in Korea as an assistant teacher. I am certainly qualified experience wise, but im just missing the degree. Any takers?
Where are the best places in Boston to be a volunteer esl tutor? I live in Boston, have my TEFL certification, and one day hope to teach English overseas... For now, Im in Boston. Any suggestions where In Boston I could work or volunteer as an esl/esol tutor? I'm most eager to work with immigrants.
How can I teach English in Germany? I am graduating from high school and taking a gap year before attending Middlebury College. I plan to go overseas to volunteer and live in a Spanish- or German-speaking country, to experience culture and life away from America, and to work on my language skills. Now if I wanted to find an opportunity to teach English in Germany, how could I get in contact with some Sprachschule or some similar institution? (I don't have a specific school in mind... I don't know where I would want to go geographically, either.)
Forgive my ignorance: Overseas issues with money and children? For years I've seen the "sponsor a child" commercials. I don't know what the weather conditions are there... Is it possible to start farms, grow food, educate people (there, or have volunteers here go to live there) so they can become doctors there... build hospitals... opportunities for jobs... ? Like I said, please forgive me if I sound ignorant of why these things haven't already happened. Can someone tell me the situation there... Isn't there a way to perminately help these people? Also... is there a way to help them with safe sex, I'm guessing that's how they are becming HIV positive? I'd just like to know how/if it's possible to actually stop the circle of sickness/death/helplessness there? Why they can't become a functioning community? The volunteering from us - to build the community, teach and help them get the ball rolling? Or have them moved to a place where these things can be achieved. Year after year... it doesn't seem to be getting any better over there, it just keeps going... no matter if you sponsor a child or not, another is born and in need. I'm hoping someday the circle of illness and helplessness can stop. Thanks.
I am confused with my next employment move? I have been unemployed for 3 months and am growing tired of it. During this time I been half-heartedly looking for a job; haven't been pushing myself as hard as I should despite the state of the economy. Since I am older now (36) I think I need to be more careful/smarter with my next move. My experience mostly lies in teaching. I have over 4 years experience teaching in Asia mostly. I taught Math and English. Since I been back I held a Quality Control job at Google. My computer skills are fairly basic. I been considering getting another teaching opportunity overseas -in Asia - since I prefer the lifestyle over there. I have also considered going back to school and getting a credential (I have a BA currently). I am reluctant to go back to school but if it will help me, more power to me! Another area I been considering is getting into Non-profit/NGO work. I would have to start off as a volunteer to gain some experience before getting a good paying job. To fend off bills, I am considering taking a retail job for now, which I hate to do but it would be an easy job while I decide. Sound Confused don't I?......lol Well, your input would be greatly appreciated - Thanks
What do people do for gap year? My sister is 17 and will be graduating from high school next year (2011). Ultimately she wants to go to Norway to study at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) in an English language bachelor program called "International Environment and Development Studies", but only after taking off a year or two for a working holiday overseas, preferrably somewhere in continental Europe. When I studied abroad, I used to meet European "gap students"aged 18-19, so I figured that my sister is up for a "gappy" program. But we really don't have much information on what that is, because it's not a very common thing to do in our country. My sister's study will mainly be about understanding how the environment, culture, trade and politics influence development; and learning how to find local and global solutions to injustice and poverty. She has big dreams of making good things happen in our country through human development, education, and business. Apart from that, she is also a performing arts enthusiast who plays great music and acts in amateur theatre productions on and off. She loves volunteering for community development projects in our country like teaching less fortunate kids, reforestation, integrated agroforestry, and mobile health services (where a crew of health professionals and volunteers drive a van of medical facilities to provide free health check ups and basic medicine to poor people in different areas of the province. The reason why she wants to take time off before university is because she is well aware that the education in our country is mostly just a bunch of formality, a checklist to tick off with no real encouragement to pursue the love of learning and fulfill potential in order to make our country a better place. Really good education is a luxury few have access to, and those who can afford it normally come from very rich families with extravagantly self-indulgent lifestyles, who shower their kids with branded items and discourage their kids from working. As a result, many high school graduates who were "well educated" become very self centered consumerists who know very little about the real world, lacking the discipline and maturity to cast a worthy vision and follow it through. My sister is determined that she will not become just another statistic, but that is very hard to break out of if that's all you've known all your life. And so she decides to break the cycle by traveling abroad at a young age to get a job, support herself, gain basic life skills and develop the discipline to do it consistently, and just understand life a little bit better by experiencing how others in different parts of the world live theirs. She believes that a year off or two to pursue these goals will help her know herself better, appreciate her dreams and future studies, and develop the necessary disciplines to sustain her future pursuits that she otherwise would have never learnt in school, and especially not in our country. So, after all is said and done, we'd be grateful for the following information: What can my sister do for gap year, from which she can learn a lot to prepare her for her future studies? Are there any organizations which organize such programs? Would it consist of a long internship with cash allowance, or working odd jobs while volunteering for a development project, involve the management of some kind of entrepreneurship / fund raising, or is it something else? What are some ways that European students spend gap year while traveling to foreign countries outside Europe, and what are some ways that Asian students spend gap year while traveling to Europe? How about visas and work permits for Norway and/or other European countries? What can our family (and ultimately my sister herself) do throughout the following year to plan this carefully and make sure that it follows through? My sister and I are citizens of Indonesia (Southeast Asia). She speaks fluent English and is a fast learner of other languages too. Spent some of her childhood in the States, Australia, and The Netherlands; but will be graduating from an international curriculum secondary school in Jakarta. Thank you!
Feels like I am loosing my mind!!!!!!!!!!!? I am 24, on my second degree (first in teaching, now studying marketing). I am job hunting. My mum lives with me nd basically everything she needs like groceries, dropping off or picking up stuff I am told to do it. I have two older sister and basically I am on there speed dial, the one was quite ill and she still is but doing a little better and is pregnant. The other has 3 kids. I get told to fetch them from school, drop off, do errands still get top marks at uni, do charity work, my name gets volunteered to go overseas to pack someone Else's belongings because they cant do it on there own before retuning home for permanent. On top of that they still want me to find a husband, get a boyfriend do everything else. It feels like Im been pulled in tons of different directions. Whenever I do do rounds I get told that I had done one thing wrong and bought 2l instead of 1l and could have bought the other 1l tomorrow or another time. SO when confronted to say if if its not good enough why not do it on your own than why tell me and than I am been told I am been rude and arrogant. I don't cry in public, or talk much to people about my emotions and everyone just thinks Im strong okay. It feels as if I am seriously but surely loosing my mind. Nothing I do is flipping good enough for anyone. Is it just me or am I just really feeling as if I am loosing the plot?

Does anyone else feel left out because their friends go on trips, have more money, and drive better cars? I am a wife and mother of a five year old boy. We live in a one bedroom apartment and don't have that much money. My husband lost his job last year and is looking for a job and I don't make any money right now but I'm going to college. I have goals of a better future for my family, that's why I decided to return to school and finish my education. I feel embarrassed inviting friends over because we live in a one bedroom apartment and it's me, my son, and my husband in one room. I've never been overseas and we don't go out much lately. I feel left out when I see my friends from the past, in facebook mostly, going on trips together to Europe, pictures of their nice homes, partying, and all that. It makes me even less reluctant on inviting them over, especially this one friend that just got married and wants to spend time with me, but I avoid her because if she comes over and sees my apartment I feel embarrassed. It's also because I don't want pity from my friends or anything like that. I also feel like if I go to her house I will feel like such a failure because she has a nice house in a nice area and she's even younger than me and everything. These things more than anything makes me more ambitious to finish school, but it also makes me feel very lonely. I'm teaching arts and craft right now while going to school on a weekly basis and I really enjoy it, but they don't make much to pay me because the art center is doing bad economically so I'm on a volunteer basis. I really enjoy what I do and I get to meet a lot of cool people, but beyond work I don't want people to come over and see where I live. Does anyone else go through this??? I've always been beyond this kind of thinking, but it's hard not to feel left out and isolated. I also feel embarrassed about my car, it's old and rusty and I see all my students and friends with nice shiny cars. It's like, when did I get left behind? Does anyone else feel this way???

Does it take a certain kind of person to have faith? Can someone help me understand this? (A bit long?)? I'm currently agnostic. I believe there is no way to know for sure whether there is a God or what happens in the afterlife until some determining event like your death or the second coming. I'm really just looking for comments or opinions on my experiences. From first grade to mid-high school I went to church. It was a baptist church. I didn't always go to regular Sunday service because I couldn't stay awake and ours was televised, and I'd rather not be seen sleeping on TV, but I did go for special event like guest speakers or really interesting topics or friends getting baptized. When I did go, I tried to concentrate, but it was no good. I DID go to many other events though. I went to a youth group twice a week, and other related activities. Though the summer I volunteered at bible camps, went on retreats, etc. I also read the bible. My family never set foot in a church so I went because I wanted to. I really liked going. I had lots of friends there, I loved helping the community (we did lots of volunteer work), and I agreed with many of the values they taught. But heres the thing. I never really could believe. I'm the type of person that needs SOME sort of proof to believe in this, or it at least has to make sense to me. Trust me, I tried. I read the bible, I prayed daily, I went to the church for help when I needed it. But I never really felt like I made any kind of connection. When I prayed, I didn't feel like I was talking to anyone. I just felt like I was thinking something up in my head.. so I always felt a little... silly. I went to the elders of the church for help, they'd pray with me, and I still never really felt something. I never had the feeling that someone was watching over me or with me that other people describe. I was "saved" several times, though never baptized (a big thing in the baptist chuch) because of this. I tried for 10 years and just couldn't believe. It's not that I didn't want to; I wanted to, but couldn't. When people say "God helped me though this", I don't really understand it. How exactly does God help them? They might say God gives them strength, but isn't that just you telling yourself you can do something? It's not God saying "you can do this", or at least, it never was to me. Everyone says there is one moment you will see a sign from God. I never experienced this, I just never felt like anything was there. People will say "thanks for putting this person into my life", but isn't it people that decide what to do for themselves? Like if you meet a new person, it's because they decided to put themselves in to that situation and meet you. Someone told me God helped them move overseas. I just don't really understand how God can do all these things. I'm not saying anyone who thanks God for these things is wrong, I guess I just don't understand it. I tend to ask a lot of questions, and I'd always go to elders and ask them questions on the lesson, and I'd get unsatisfactory answers like "you just have to believe it, you shouldn't question the word of God". I'd pick up the inconsistencies and they'd say "not everything in the bible is to be taken literally", but then other times they'd say it was. So sometimes I think it was my choice of churches that caused me to never be able to have any sort of faith. I think I gave it a pretty fair chance. Does anyone have any kind of opinion on my experiences with Christianity? I always felt like I wanted to have that faith and I couldn't. People say "just give in and believe" but I tried so hard to do that, and I just couldn't. So am I just the kind of person that just can't believe? What advice would you give to someone who tells you they want to have faith and can't? (I'm not saying I want to become christian by any means, just interested in the responses). I don't feel like I wasted my time in church because I accomplished a lot there by helping other people, but I always felt a bit like I was lying when I was there! Also, people say "just keep with it and it'll click", but after 10 years I certainly think I should have felt SOMETHING.. I can't spend my whole life TRYING to believe in something, it's really just lying to myself, isn't it?
Should I enlist or do college AFROTC? I'm thinking about doing it, but I have a bit of a conflict. Up until September or so of last year [2008] I had plans to go to college. Then my mom told me she was forcing me to enlist in the USAF, which was possible for her to do because of our overseas status [active duty parents] and my lack of personal funds. At first I was upset, but then I got okay with it because I know the pros and cons of each road and enlisting is actually better for me right now. However, my career of choice has shifted since then and while the Air Force would be beneficial, it would only help if I were an officer. I want to be a pilot [1st choice] or flight attendant [2nd choice]. Though I dont have the best of grades I took all advances classes in high school. And although I dont have much paid-work time, I have tons of volunteer hours and im going on eighteen years as a USAF brat. Many people say that most USAF pilots graduate from The Academy, and for those who didn't the say that having flight time in general helps. Is it possible to do a year of college AFROTC and transfer to the Academy [if I were accepted]? And if not, upon graduating from college with a sort of aviation-geared degree...would I be okay? Please dont link me to any sites as I have read most of them. I basically want a real-person break down of the deal. What percentage of AFROTC people actually get a scholarship? Is it possible to begin college late [spring instead of fall] and still do ROTC on a normal schedule? Does anyone know the deadlines to apply for AFROTC for 2009 high school graduates? Any information/advice about AFROTC and the scholarships and such is welcomed. And as a side question: Does anyone know if colleges with piloting majors give you a chance to do flight time? Or do they just teach you what you need to know[aka the book stuff]?
Tell me if I am good enough for ivy league? I am curious how appealing I would be to an ivy league college. OK, so I am on the softball team for my high school. I am the shortstop and we are number 1 in the state. I take AICE classes and one AP class. I am a red belt in Tae Kwon Do. I almost have all my credits to graduate from my community college(I do Duel Enrollment). I am fluent in Welsh, English, Spanish, Vietnamese(curtesy to my friend) and Japanese(taught myself). I got a 2350 score on my SAT and a 35 on my ACT. I am in NHS, Beta, Honors program at community college, East Asian Society(don't ask), Beautification Club(clean up school), Future Problem Solvers, World Language Club, Gay Straight Alliance(not gay believe in same sex marriage though). I am the president of my class and have over 400 volunteer hours. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA. I got the Excellence Award(in 5th grade, not sure if counts), Jefferson Award just recently. I went on 3 people to people trips overseas and had first hand experience with other students. I'm not bragging, I just want to know if I could get into Harvard if I wanted to, because I always hear that seniors with a perfect SAT score and GPA still don't get in. Just tell me flatly, I'll get over it.:)))

does the average student have a chance at attending a good college? I am a junior in high school and feel pretty lost when it comes to college. I have looked into a few schools but I feel like I have no real chance at attending. As my parents push the issue of college on to me I continue to feel like I cannot compete with the average applicant. One main reason I feel like that is because I go to school on an overseas navy base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to be exact. Now I like the school down here, but the problem is it does not offer many AP classes and the only honors classes offered are 9th and 10th grade history and English. I took the 10th grade ones because I moved here in 10th grade. As far as AP classes by the time I graduate I should have 5 or 6 depending on if there is enough interest and if a teacher can teach it. I also feel behind in math because there are no honors classes and I started with Algebra 1 in 9th grade. So far I have taken Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Discrete Math, and senior year I plan on taking AP Stats, and Pre-Calculus. My GPA is decent, I have around a 3.85 un-weighted cumulative since the honors classes down here were not weighted but I don't know if the classes I've taken will make that look good or bad. My test scores were also decent. I have only taken the ACT and managed to rise raised my score for a 23 to a 25. I am set to take the SAT in May and I feel like I will do better on that than the ACT. I have a few Extra-curricular activities but sports are the main thing down here and I am not that great of an athlete. I served as editor of the school paper, until this year when they canceled the student paper, I’ve been in NHS since sophomore year, captain of the bowling team and we bowled in the adult league, I have an intership at our local NCIS office, member of Future Educators of America, I have some volunteer work but I do not know how many hours, and over the summer I worked a 40 hour a week job at a rec. center for single sailors. Sorry if it seems like I'm ranting I just really need some direction and the whole college process is really stressing me out and I have not even applied anywhere.
How can I start teaching overseas? Italy/Japan/France/Spain? I just graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Education here in Florida and took all the state required tests for certification just need to finish online stuff for the county (finger printing and cross the t's and dot the i's.) All I am doing right now is waiting for my degree to be FINALLY mailed to my house (2 MONTHS!!!) I am also ESOL endorsed as well. The thing is with the economy the way it is, my want to travel (while I'm still young maybe,) and the stories I hear about teaching successes overseas I kind of developed a yearning to try this. My problem is I seem to run across scams online and even the sugestions of the college I attended didn't seem to pan out for my peers (shelled out money for an application fee and didn't get in?!?!?) so I am very leery and need suggestions from people who have tried organizations that didn't drain their finances on fees and who were satisfied with the accomodations. I have a lot of internship experience as well as experience growing up volunteering not just as a teacher but a tutor, babysitter, mother's helper and volunteer to salvation army and our local wildlife visitors center. I however WANT TO MAKE MONEY not volunteer overseas. I am looking for a job that pays! I want them to supply the tickets to and from the county, room and board and meals. My reasons for doing this are to experience and see a place/culture I actually have wanted to visit since I can remember, start out on a great path teaching wise (looks good on a resume if I teach overseas and come back,) get away from my current social life for a while (I want to meet new people!!!) Basically where can I apply and will they supply the books and materials I'll need or should I come VERY prepared?
What's a good TEFL (Teaching English overseas) program that's not a scam? I want to volunteer overseas teaching English or maybe get a paying position but I see so many of these "opportunities" are either really scams that want to take your money, or require a teaching degree. I'm 20 years old and have an associate's degree in sociology. Any suggestions for a program in Asia or Latin America preferably?
Overseas summer volunteering opportunities for High School Student (preferably Asia)? Well, right now I'm looking for volunteer opportunities for a high school student to volunteer overseas (preferably in Asia). I was just wondering if anyone know of any good opportunities for like grassroots volunteering (helping teach local kids English, volunteering in local villages, etc.) since I'm not very interested in those big programs where grassroots volunteering in rural isn't their main focus. If anyone knew of any programs like this, it'd be great since right now, I'm looking for opportunities in China and Taiwan.
are there volunteer jobs teaching/training basic computer technology and use overseas, without paying a fee? Most ads for volunteer jobs ask for a fee. Seems to me, if one is volunteering, why should he/she have to pay. I am a retired computer person seeking to give back something. Prefer volunteering in undeveloped countries around the world.
volunteering overseas for experience? would volunteering overseas be beneficial to a university application? im thinking of taking medicine, or would it be best to stick in the uk volunteering in care homes etc. I was thinking volunteering in kenya or ghana and helping to teach english to children for 2-4 weeks in summer holiday time
Where is the right place for me to volunteer overseas? I'm 19 years old and I'm taking a year off college to do some 'soul searching' I guess. i've been thinking about volunteering for a while, but I'm not sure what program would be the right to do. I'm interested in volunteering overseas. My passion is teaching, and I think that might be something I could do overseas, but seeing as I don't have a college degree I'm not sure. Any suggestions? What is a good organization to try? Who can I talk to? What is a good organization to try? Who can I talk to? It doesn't really matter where I'm working overseas. I was raised Lutheran and would also be interested in going with a religious organization. I'm not picky as to where, I just want to gain some experience and help wherever I can.
teaching english abroad? I would like to volunteer to teach English overseas. Do i need any qualifications and/or knowledge of the language of the country in which I'll be teaching?
Do any North Americans have advice on teaching English as a foreigh language overseas? I don't have a degree, but I just completed a 100-hour TEFL Certificate for Teaching Young Learners (geared towards ages 6-16). I have never travelled abroad, and don't know where I would like to work. I have a lot of volunteer experience in various classrooms/tutoring scenarios. I do not have a valid passport, but I have applied for one. I am a single female. I have looked at websites such as daveseslcafe.com and tefl.com, but how do I narrow my search, especially for jobs that I can obtain without a degree?
Overseas summer programs or volunteer opportunities for under 18 students? A friend of mine landed a job to teach English in Taiwan over the summer, and it sounds like an amazing experience. Does anyone know of overseas posts (not necessarily teaching) or programs available to under 18 year old students? Thanks for the help. P.S. For a point of reference I mean something like http://www.aideabroad.org but for under 18's
i want to volunteer overseas this summer for about a month. I am certified to teach ESL. Input? Can anyone suggest a good company that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?!
How can I get paid to work overseas? I'm looking for organizations that place people overseas for work. I'm already aware of the teaching opportunities but I wanted to know if anything else was available (I don't have a teaching license). I would even be willing to volunteer for free in exchange for a plane ticket and a free place to stay. I appreciate any advice or help :) !
TEACHING ENGLISH OVERSEAS? I actually have a few questions so please help me if you can. 1.What education do i need to do this and which college is best? Also, do colleges like harvard and yale offer this. 2. Can i find a permanent career in this? 3. Im and most interested in working in Africa but what other places pay the most? 4. Are there programs that will pay for expenses too, and what are the best programs to join. (will i work in a university or a private building?) p.s. im looking for a career not a volunteer, temporary, or low pay program like peace corps. THNX SO MUCH FOR ANYONE WHO CAN HELP
What programs/groups can help me volunteer overseas as a EMT? i'm really interested in volunteering over seas, i'm currently working towards my emt-b license. and should have it by the end of june. i'd like to volunteer during the summer while school is not in session i looked into the peace corps, but they only offer 27 month rotations. im lookin for something that allows the option of just a few weeks to a few months, not a year or more. does anyone know of any? where i can put my medical skills to use? as opposed to just going there without any, and end up teaching or something??? i'd like to go overseas specificily to help out medical-wise
How long does it take to be an Elementary school teacher? how long will it take me to be an elementary school teacher? 4 year degree and thats it??? I have 2 years teaching english overseas in china.. does that help towards my volunteer experience or anything?
Last minute Korea overseas volunteer trip. Visa Issues?? This is a very short-notice trip to Korea. I'll be teaching a summer English camp at the YMCA. How much notice do I need to apply for a VISA? What are my options? Thank you!
English teaching jobs in Africa, Middle East, Mediterranean? Anyone know of any job openings teaching English as a second/foreign language in the Middle East, Africa, or the Mediterranean? I'm TEFL certified now and am volunteering locally to get some experience, but am ultimately interested in relocating overseas to southern Europe or northern Africa. Specifically, I'd love to find something in Alexandria, Egypt or the UAE or Morocco!
I really want to go abroad for a few months. How do I go about doing this without paying buckets of money? I would like to live overseas (I live in the USA) for a few months. Working somewhere would be the most preferable situation, though I have no degree nor any marketable skills, so that may not be entirely feasible. Are there places (safe for a woman to live alone) where I can teach English without qualifications? I wouldn't mind volunteering as long as my room and board are covered, I wouldn't mind paying for the flight.
Need some advice for securing an NGO job? I have over 4 years experience teaching ESL and Mathematics overseas. Now, I would like to work for an NGO abroad, preferably Asia. Although I have applied to quite a few jobs that I feel I am suited for I have had no success. I'd like to know how you got yours and some suggestions. I am thinking I may need to volunteer initially, but need to get paid unfortunately. I would appreciate your input. Thanks.
Instead of schoolies I would like to volunteer. Any charities that help either animals or humans? I'm a Sydney resider so Aussie programs would help or international/domestic organisations that take you overseas where help is alot more needed. What are those charities that let you either teach or build a house over in countries like Thailand, Peru, etc for people aged between 16-25? Thanks

What is a career that will allow me to travel the globe? I'm currently a freshman in college and have yet to declare a major. I'd like for my future career to allow me to travel all over the world and allow me to explore other countries and other continents. After college I plan on joining the Peace Corps for a few years to volunteer overseas. It'd be nice to have a large income but is not necessary. Right now I'm considering marine biology, and I think that I'd be able to study marine sciences all over the world. Another career I'm considering is teaching, and I'd love to teach to students in third world countries. What other careers would allow me to travel from country to country every 2-3 years?
Are the only opportunities to teach TEFL/ESL inside the US volunteer gigs? I have my TEFL certification, and have been a volunteer English tutor here in the states- I thought I was going to teach English overseas, but looks like i'll be here in Boston for a long time.... The *only* opportunities to teach English to non native speakers that I have been able to find are volunteer gigs- I like to volunteer- but I'd rather be paid....Where-inside the US (Boston in particular) would I be able to find paying positions to teach or tutor English to non native speakers? Thank you. I have a Bachelors degree and TEFL certification.

If I have $40,000 in deferred student loans.......? If I have $40,000 of student loans that are currently deferred, is there a way I can get some of this forgiven? My degree is in Business Management and I work in the Human Resources field. I am would like to pay off as much as possible as I am a single mother preparing to send my own child off to college in a matter of a few years. I know that if someone is a school teacher or becomes a full-time school teacher, they can have some of that loan forgiven. I believe the same is also true for Doctor's but I wonder if there is anything for professionals who are not in the teaching field or medical field. Even if someone has had this same experience this would be great information. I know I am responsible for paying it off but I wanted to throw this out there in the atmosphere to see if there might be any loopholes of "forgiveness" for any other professionals. I've heard you can go overseas and do volunteer work but overseas is not an option for me at this point in the juncture. Thanks!!!!!!
World Poverty, International Development, questions, questions!? This starts a few months ago, when I was doing a project for school and came across Doctor's Without Borders' website. I was surprized when it said that due to the tons of people wanting to volunteer/work for them, they couldn't accept everyone's help because there were many candidates and a lot of competition. (Well, it didn't say it that way but I read between the lines) This seems to conflict other sources that insist Africa needs more doctors. If they need more, then why aren't they sending more doctors? My conclusion has been that it's expensive, and so the government can't afford – well, at least doesn't want to pay- the money for more doctors to leave the country. Can someone just write and assure me that I'm making the right conclusions? Because it doesn't acyually SAY this ANYWHERE on the internet. Anyway, then later I came across this book “Working in International Development and Emergency Aid” and found out that working overseas in developing countries is VERY competitive. Well then, if we have so many volunteers willing and able to live overseas and help, why are there so many people in the world that are starving? Why, if there are so many people willing to go overseas and volunteer in developing countries, are so many turned down? You'd think the organizations would be saying “Sure, we need all the help we can get!” It's like people are literally fighting for these jobs that help people in developing countries. Everyone says people aren't doing enough to help, yet people who want to work in “International Development and Emergency Aid”, as they call it, find it hard to find jobs. I'm in grade 10, so I probably didn't understand everything I read, or at least I must have interpereted it wrong because this doesn't make any sense. (???) The one conclusion I've drawn is that it's more a lack of money that's causing the problem of us rich countries not being able to help the poor ones, not a lack of volunteers. I mean, volunteers can only do so much before having to go home and make money for themselves to live off, I guess. Or what else explains the big number of people who want a career dedicated to helping people in developing countries, being turned down? This started out as a school project but it's gone WAY beyond that. (anyway, I've long since changed topics and picked to write about something simpler) But, I'm still really interested! What are people doing to help people in third world countries? I know they're sending doctors. Are they also sending teachers? I tried researching teachers that have gone to developing countries to teach for a few months, but mostly all I found was job openings for teachers who want to teach in Spain or other rich countries. I've read that the key to helping countries out of povery is by helping their economies, not just sending them money, which makes sense I guess. I want to learn about more stuff like this, I mean, what could be more important than helping these people who don't even have a chance? I also read that people are giving out small loans and that these small loans help people a lot in starting small buisnesses. What happens if the person's buisness doesn't work? Do they still have to pay back the money? It's stuff like this I want to find out about. Does anyone know of any websites? I've read about the UN's Millenium Development goals. They sound good in theory, but ever since starting my research I suppose I've grown a little more pessimistic, I guess, and I'm wondering, how do they plan on going about acheiving these goals? Type in “Millenium development goals” and you can find them easily, but what I haven't been able to find is their action plan. Perhaps I'm not too good at researching, or are they just not out there for the public? Is there anyone who knows where (books, websites) I can find out about poverty in developing countries and how people are helping stop it, drilling wells and such? I usually beleive in doing my own research, but I've sort of hit a brick wall here. It's hard to filter through all the “donate, donate, donate” advertizements and find what I'm really looking for. Information, plain and simple. I can come up with my own conclusions, thank you. Oh, and one more thing, thank you for taking the time to answer this looooong question, or some of it, but please don't just give me a list of charities, chances are I've already heard of them!
what job am i qualified for? I want to leave non-profits....? 3 years abroad teaching ESL 1 year as paralegal for non profit 1 year volunteer work at temp director for non profit overseas Honors BA in Political Science speak conversational Spanish I'm trying to merge into the private sector (aka out of the non-profit sector cuz I can't make ends meet) I dont want to do retail or food service, I would like to start a career... ideas?
I am 65 years old. I have a 2 year technical Arts degree from a junior college. How can i get a 4 yr degree? I have 20years experience in law enforcement. Also 5 years as a Business manager for one of the largest churches in Texas , and have owned my own business for 15 years. I am overseas and would like to teach English for pay, I am doing it now, but only as a volunteer. If I had the 4 year degree, I could be paid for my work. There is a great demand for people who are skilled teachers, to teach English as a second language. When I was in Law Enforcement, I taught for 4 years in the State Patrol Academy. I know and understand teaching methods, as well as preparing lesson plans,.
Physical Therapy vs Occupational Therapy? Physical therapy vs Occupational therapy? Physiotherapy vs Occupational therapy? -Do you feel as an OT that sometimes you cant answer certain questions about their condition from your patients and you have to direct them to the PTs? -Do you feel that PTs play a way more important role in the hospital? -Do OTs find it harder to get jobs as compared to PTs? -Do hospitals usually tend to let go of more OTs than PTs because they are less important? -Is it true that OTs play a small part in the patients inpatient rehabilitation and is focused on more outpatient? -Is it true that OT school is not as difficult as PT school because it is less science based? -Are OTs known for being less knowledgeable of the human body as compared to PTs because they study less of the human body? -Is the study of OT more mechanical or business as compared to PT? -How important is OT in third world countries as compared to PT? Are they a solely North American type of job? How will OT play a role in a rural village in Africa full of war children? Do OTs usually travel overseas for such volunteer positions? -If I were a fitness enthusiast, should I consider OT or PT more? Which would be more interesting for me or will both be equally exciting? Do OTs develop, prescribe and teach exercises to in-patients or out-patients or is that the job of a PT? -OK very honestly, which job is more exciting and why? -What are the pros and cons of being an OT? -Please answer only if you are an OT or PT and you really know please. I know these are really blunt questions. I hope I offend no OTs by asking. I am just an undergrad student trying to seek direction. Its only because OT is so much less heard of than PT, I really don't want to regret my decisions or be laid off because I am not a PT... I need really practical & honest opinions. Thanks so much.
How did you decide what field of work to go into? I'm majoring in English, I was going to teach. I'm at the point right now where I could change my mind and not do any major damage to my studies. I don't think I want to teach. We've been overseas for a couple of years and I've done a lot of volunteer work for a non-proft geared toward women and children. Other than that, my "career" has been a professional server and hostess, as various restaurants, haha. I'm freaking out a bit, I've done very well in math classes, but it's not my fortay, so to speak, I really have to delve into it and commit a lot of time to get that A, where as for others it seems effortless. Although I did well at accounting. I don't know, any insight would be great. I've thought about nursing but I think i'm a little to empathetic, and although I'm positive I'd give excellent care, I fear what emotional damage it would do to my mental and physical health. My skin isn't thick enough for that stuff methinks. Well any info would be great. I'm a little lost at the moment. My husband just scored a great job, he has lots of training through the Air Force, and just finished his degree, I'd like to bring some decent cash to the table also, but not in a job I'm miserable in. Decisions, Decisions

Getting into the Air Force Academy help? I'm a senior in high school. [They say you should start applying mid-junior year]. I'm also an USAF brat. About a 2.5 GPA as of right now [trying to raise it to a 3.0], and i got a 1580 on my SAT. I'm slim but not sure if im really in shape. I could work at that though. I hear they're big on people who do sports, which I didnt. Im more of a fine arts person. Music and dance are my life. I have ALOTTTT of volunteer hours though. From Spec. Olymics help to helping teach 5th graders. I've also heard that you have to have some sort of congressional nomination. Im currently overseas, so how would I get that? Do you think i have what it takes to get in? Or should I just enlist for 4 - 8 years?
Teaching english overseas? I actually have a few questions so please help me if you can. 1.What education do i need to do this and which college is best? Also, do colleges like harvard and yale offer this. 2. Can i find a permanent career in this? 3. Im and most interested in working in Africa but what other places pay the most? 4. Are there programs that will pay for expenses too, and what are the best programs to join. (will i work in a university or a private building?) p.s. im looking for a career not a volunteer, temporary, or low pay program like peace corps. THNX SO MUCH FOR ANYONE WHO CAN HELP.
