What are some cheap, long-term, volunteering-abroad opportunities? I am taking a gap year before I start college. I have almost a year ahead of me in which I would like to spend most of my time volunteering abroad. I have around $3000 saved up and I have a plane ticket to anywhere in the world. I realize that $3000 is not sufficient for most volunteer organizations but I know there are some organizations out there that I can volunteer through with as little money as I have. Any ideas?
Is volunteering abroad important for medical school? It seems everyone I know is trying to volunteer internationally before applying to medical school. To be honest, it seems to me a bit inefficient and unnecessary. You pay thousands of dollars to work 2-4wks tops in some 3rd world country. I feel its just glamorous, i mean if you really wanted to help ppl then just spend the summers working in a local hospital/shelter and/or tutoring underprivileged ppl. What do you guys think? Im sure vol. abroad helps your application but is it important/that great to have in particular?
What is your favorite organization for volunteering abroad? I am currently 16 and looking very seriously into a life of public service. My question is simply what is your favorite organization that allows you to volunteer abroad? Who makes the most impact? And why is it your favorite? Any and all comments are very much appreciated. I take all information to very serious consideration and review.
How can I get people to sponsor me in volunteering abroad? I'm hoping to volunteer abroad in Cambodia this summer, but I need to somehow raise about $4000 dollars. I've entered several speedgrant competitions and told everyone I know about it, and set up a webpage (http://volunteerabroad2008.blogspot.com), but no donations whatsoever so far. I was thinking perhaps I could get sponsored by some business or organization, but I have no idea how to go about doing this. I'm not registered as a non-profit or anything. Edit: I am NOT interested in any service that actually requires me to pay money. I'm just looking for possible organizations/corporations that could sponsor me or donate some money. EDIT: Approaching newspapers is a great idea - thanks! Does anyone know of a directory to find small newspapers and suchlike in my area? I know the prices are very high but this particular program is rather unusual and extremely good. Also, a very significant amount is going towards the plane ticket. I managed to find a person who will sponsor at least part of it though, which is heartening. I'm trying to get a job, but I also kind of need money to like... eat...
Does Anyone Know About Volunteering Abroad Organizations? Are there any organizations you know of that you would recomend or not recomend? Any information you know of would be helpful. Thanks

A wierd fear about volunteering abroad in another country? Why do I feel like that if I volunteer in another country, that the people won't like me because they'll be expecting a white person (I'm African-American) because all the volunteer abroad websites that I have researched, there are only white people in the ads. How do I stop having this fear? And I'm being serious, not joking

Good program for volunteering abroad for a 17 year old? So I'm 16 now, but by next summer I'll be 17, and I'd like to go on a 2 week or month long program for teens to volunteer abroad, maybe in south america, africa or india. Volunteering abroad without an organization? My roommate and I would like to spend about 6 months volunteering in Morocco. Last time he did this in Uganda he went with an organization, however we feel it would be more affordable for us to arrange our own hostels and travel. From there we hope to just kind of walk in volunteer sort of, we are interested in working with youth, I am interested in medical volunteering as well. Has anyone done this themselves or had friends who have? Any tips? All responses are appreciated. Thanks!

Are there actually free abroad volunteering programs? I'm not a u.s citizen, so UN, peacecorps, etc aren't possible. I'm 20, and a university student, and would like to go on a volunteering program for about 3-4 weeks. But i'm not going to pay 3000-5000 $ for the program itself, i mean, its just stupid, why would i pay for my own work?? I'm willing to pay for the airfare, food and accommodation. I'd like something to do with wildlife, or animals. So are there any programs that offer something like this?thanks

Questions about volunteering abroad? Hi, I am considering going abroad to help out communities from a disadvantaged background for example Nepal, helping out in the isolated communities. I would love to help out by helping to construct schools, housing or by teaching and generally helping out the local community. Are there any good websites that organise good volunteer places? Which countries would you recommend? How long would you recommend I stay as this is my first trip? (I am taking a gap year before attending university). Thank you.
Are there any cheap volunteering organizations that work abroad? I'm not yet in college, but I want to try and participate in some volunteering programs out of the country (U.S.). Unfortunately I have a tight budget that really can't even go to a thousand which includes air fare. Does anyone know any organization at all that is cheap enough that I can help out with?

Medical Volunteering abroad? Hi everyone. I tried searching medical volunteering abroad both on the web and here in Yahoo Answers. I am a 17 year old first year university of Toronto student. I heard from someone that there are opportunities in developing countries where even a non medical professional are asked to do basic medical procedures such as injecting needles because there are very few physicians available. I tried searching this kind of opportunity but it was mostly for medical professionals. Do you know any organizations that provides opportunities for a non experienced people like me to do hands on experience? Thank you for your help

Does anyone have any information or sites where I am eligible to volunteer abroad. Please tell me anything you know, because I am quite clueless :) thanks! My only volunteering experience is with my church fixing houses in upstate New York I dont have to be by myself, I can go with an appointed guardian if needed or something
Volunteering to work abroad, is there anywhere where you don't have to pay loads to volunteer?? I have wanted to do this for a very long time, but the fees are so high. I understand why they want to charge, but I am willing and able to give up my time to go somewhere where Ican be of help and get great satisfaction and experience doing it. But, I don't have the resources to pay. Will I ever realise my ideas? I am a 50 something woman so not a young kid wanting to party...... I can't join the Peace Corps I'm not American, I'm English, sorry!
Working/volunteering/interning abroad for 6 months in the U.K? So, I will be graduating this December, meaning that it only took me 3.5 years to earn a Bachelor's Degree at my school. Since I plan on attending law school in August 2008, I will finish my schooling December of this year, and I will have until May/June to do whatever...(my school only has Commencement ceremonies in May, so I would have to go back and walk/get my diploma in May, even though I'll be done in December..) Anyways, I want to travel to England. I've been there several times before, and this time I want to either work there for 6 months, intern, or volunteer, for anywhere between 3-6months. It's hard to know how to begin this process. Any suggestions on organizations, etc? I am also a dual-citizen and hold passports for both the U.S. as well as the U.K so I don't think work Visa will be a huge issue. But I don't even know if you need Visa's for volunteering, or even if they have abroad intern programs.
Does anyone know of any affordable volunteer abroad programs? I am a college student looking to volunteer abroad this summer. I go to a small college, and they don't really offer a lot of good volunteering abroad programs. Because of this, I am looking to go through an organization. I am looking to volunteer abroad for a week or two this summer. I really want to work with children. As for budget, i don't want to spend over $2000 with airfare. I have already looked into orphanage outreach. Does anyone know of any other programs?
Volunteering abroad good experience/ bad experience? ? I'm a student in High School and i thought about volunteering abroad! Has anyone volunteered abroad and it is a good experience? Also what would look better for a college helping in disaster zone in america (katrina/houston) or volunteering abroad... College isn't the only reason i want to volunteer? What is a good program to volunteer or volunteer abroad?
How do I volunteer for free abroad? Does anyone know of any organizations that offer programs such as this? I am mainly interested in helping animals and/or the environment. I would like to know what all is involved in volunteering abroad.
Why precisely do you have to pay to volunteer abroad? I have been looking at volunteering abroad for about 8 weeks which means that I will be foregoing a salary in my own country for this period which I was prepared to accept. All of the programmes I have looked into want to charge me between £1700 and £4000. Why precisely would I have to pay to volunteer? This seem pretty weird to me... Also why call it volunteering because it really isn't. It's paying to work abroad! I could get flights and accommodation in these countries for much cheaper than these companies/organistaions are charging.. so what are they doing with the money? e.g I just spent 5 weeks in Rwanda which cost me in total about £700 for flights, accommodation and food., yet these places are quoting me about £3000! I can't join the Peace Corps as I'm British...

What kinds of low-cost volunteer abroad programs are available to high school students? I have been looking online for possible volunteer abroad programs but I can't find any that fit my requirements. Can anyone help me? I want: - 4 weeks max, or less (preferably 2 weeks-ish) - under $3000 - programs that accept people under 18 years of age - programs that will allow me to make a difference while also providing an educational opportunity Anyone have any suggestions/ past experience with this? Thanks.
Where can I find free volunteer opportunities abroad? I'd like to volunteer abroad for a while, anwhere from three to ten months, working with WILDLIFE. Where doesn't really matter, and I'm willing to pay for my own living expenses, but if I'm going to be working for free eight hours a day, six days a week, I'd like the program itself to be free. While I'd be a burden for a while, I learn quick and I'd be an assest for up to nine months.
How can I inexpensively volunteer abroad? I want to volunteer abroad this summer like in Africa or something but all of the programs I find cost alot of money, like a couple thousand dollars. I think you have to be 18 to join the Peace Corps. Yeah I saw that group when I was researching and I'm not 18 so I couldn't qualify for the scholarship. I've been on mission trips before to Costa Rica with my church, but I just wanted to do volunteer work instead of mission work. p.s. I'll be 17 next summer
Groups for Volunteering Abroad? Does anyone have a list of Volunteer Groups that will pay for food, transportation, and board for people taking a break before starting college and wanting to spend 6-12 months abroad.

Does anyone know of a good place to volunteer abroad that isn't very expensive? I am a senior in high school and for my senior project (a requirement at my school) I want to help endangered animals. There aren't any places close to where I live that I can volunteer at. I want to volunteer abroad, anyways. But, all the sites I have seen charge way more than I'd like to pay. I would like to go to a place that specializes in helping tigers, but somewhere that has a variety of endangered animals would work, too. Does anyone have some useful information?
Volunteering abroad for teens? Hi! I am a 15 year old girl from the US and I am interested in volunteering overseas.
