Commerical furniture delivery - How do you send coffee tables by freight? I am in the process of setting up a small furniture making business and I need to know how do you go about sending coffee tables etc that are not flat- packed. I would imagine that you would bubble-wrap the items and then get a freight company like Fedex to pick them up. Is it that easy? Should I consider putting these type of items in crates. The coffee tables I have made would be sent out lndividually to customers. They are not overly expensive and really not that large. But would Fedex etc accept this type of furniture without being crated. If it is OK to send just by bubble-wrapping, what is the best way to do this to ensure the items does not get damaged? I would also be sending out the coffee tables etc to international customers.
Does anyone have ideas on what to replace the glass in our coffee tables with? My wife and I would like to replace the glass in our coffee and end tables with something other than glass. I thought this might be something that other people have done in the past but I cannot find any info on the net. I thought of using 20" X 20" porcelain tile but it may be too heavy and Lowes does not have a wet saw big enough to cut it (you would think they would but they don't - at least at my local Lowes). I'm looking for something light but sturdy. Other suggestions have been fiberboard covered with some sort of leather cover. I'd really appreciate some info if anyone has done this or has good ideas. Thanks!

There are no antique "coffee" tables - so when did this invention happen, who came up with it & why "coffee"? As a hobby, my husband and I collect antique furniture - but the oldest "coffee" table we could find was called a "low table" from the 20s...seems like before that, everybody used "tea" tables which were a lot higher. When did the modern concept of coffee tables come about and who invented it...and why do we still call it a coffee table anyway...since, it's a pain to put your coffee there anyway. The "end" table usually gets the job first and the "coffee" table is good for just about nothing but books, remotes, and the heels of your tired little feet. Anybody got info?

What is the purpose of a coffee table? I have been redecorating my apartment and I have been trying to find a coffee table. I found a really interesting one on craigslist. It is an apothecary table with many drawers on both sides...very big. It got me to wondering, how did coffee tables originate and what exactly is the purpose of them? To put coffee on? Most of the time they end of collecting junk, but they do look nice in living rooms.
