Don Cherry Coaches Corner Knowledge Base

Don Cherry? Tonight on Coach's Corner, Don Cherry said that McLennan only gave Franzen a "tap" when he slashed him. Then he tries to justify this by showing how McLennan got hit in the helmet by Franzen's stick. To say that the slash was a "tap" is unbelieveable! What do you think?
What the HECK happened to DON CHERRY???? Ok guys....Please tell me...What happened to DON Cherry and COACHES CORNER. On Hockey Night in Canada...he is ALWAYS on after first period with Don Mclean...Now, I typically see Mclean doing commentaries with Kelly Hrudy..... Granted, I only started watching hockey like this week. I have not had a chance to watch any games this year :) Did I miss something??
hockey Don cherry. d day landing.? coaches corner. the hated don cherry. the most accurate historical fact about d day. the canadians that landed were 14 to 18 miles into france . had to return to the Beach's to assist other countries. this is the very first broadcast of this hidden fact. if cherry is such a big mouth. why is it that less than 2 percent of canadian population are aware of this fact. hard to bash him after this. please do not insult people saying you were aware of this fact. not common knowledge. que4stion asked major universities. less than 2 % new. my father was in the skies battle britian d day. great uncle flanders. the question is. why are so mant highly educated unaware of this.
What makes Don Cherry so special? I was watching HNIC a few days ago, and in the middle of coaches corner I started think, what makes him so special? He's kind of a dick and as an American maybe I don't get it but can someone explain to me why Don Cherry can be so rude on TV and dress like an ass and yet it seems like he's a national hero?
NHL, did you hear the phoenix coyotes are coming back to Winnipeg? If phoenix coyotes don't get real financial support, this week, I heard they are coming to Winnipeg this upcoming season. Blackberry guy wanted a nhl team in hamilton, nhl told him winnipeg gets a team first. Don Cherry on coaches corner in the last month stated winnipeg would soon get a nhl team. Nhl has ten teams that cost the nhl $50,000,000 bucks per year, each one of these teams could easily wind up here, but phoenix looks like they might drop the ball first. Did you hear that winnipeg may get their hockey team back this year? It's been on local news in winnipeg too, even today, that if phoenix doesn't come up with money, they are back to wpg. Winnipeg has a new arena, money, buyer, and NHL approval, could be this season, WOW! Did you hear...
Thank you Don Cherry.? I asked a question a while ago about WHY Carey Price WILL NOT get any acknowledgement for the Calder. Don Cherry touched on this a bit during coach's corner. He made a very strong point. Montreal was projected to end up in 13th place this season and Carey Price carried them to first. Carey Price, let's face it. Had a good season for a starting rookie did he not? Yet they gave more acknowledgement to a guy who had 15 goals. Now 15 goals is a great feat for a player like Backstrom in a rookie season, but i personally can't look at backstrom's season and say that it was worthy of a Calder finalist. It took him a lot longer to score his first goal then most, and until really the end of the season he wasn't very consistant. I don't know.. im one opinion. Carey Price should have a spot in the final 3 but whatever. i agree was well bob, Mueller will be right up there. i also agree on the starter thing. but no matter what point in the season, how many goalies can take the responsibility and stay so calm and collected during most games. ive only ever seen him rattled once, which was against boston. Kate, hush down with the jokes, people are going to find out your taking cheesey joke lessons from me! lol jk. but Priceless? lol see LITY, i don't think he's a calder winner. but i fail to see where there was no talk about him anywhere? But i almost see this a good thing.. sometimes too much attention can make a player or goalie explode. well yes in Montreal. i hope there was hype in montreal..
Don Cherry gives thumbs up to the Peg, your thoughts? On Coach's Corner tonight, the Don officially gave the thumbs up for Phoenix's re-relocation to Winnipeg. Like him or not, he is the number one figure in the hockey media. I know this has been discussed before, but the NHL has been static for a decade and a team moving is big news. The Winnipeg move is gaining a lot of traction, and Ice Edge or whatever is resorting to April Fools jokes to stay relevant. What is the most likely occurrence? Phoenix moving in one, two, or three years, to Winnipeg or somewhere else.. or having a miracle save by that baseball guy or increasingly irrelevant Ice Edge? I think a lot of it depends on their potential playoff success this year.
Hockey fans - Don's suit on Coach's Corner tonight. Opinions? I think - vintage Don Cherry. avsgirl - here is an example of one of his cool suits. It's not the same one though http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=rAJWUI8cBLo Oh - here are a bunch of good ones... http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=uVPEEbpIvw8
What is the theme music for the "coach's corner" segment on Hockey Night in Canada ? Not the Dolores Claman< "Hockey Night in Canada" theme, but the music played during the montage prior to Don Cherry's segment.

How does Sidney Crosby tape his hockey stick? I saw on coach's corner the other day about how Sidney Crosby tapes his stick. However, it was kind of hard to see. Does anyone know what Don Cherry was saying about the tape job? I want to know so I can try it on my stick. Thanks!
Hitting from behind... sometimes not their fault(opinions please)? I was watching a hockey game the other day and during the intermissioni watch coaches corner (which every young player should) and Don Cherry was talking about people turning their backs once they know someone's coming in for the hit. That happened to me today during a game, i was gonna hit him but as soon as i was a few inches away from him (which not everyone can same at while skating at a high-speed) he turned his back and i got called for hitting from behind. i broke his wrist, some how it went into the boards. WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS?!?!
Coach's corner made me think (read on)? After playing a Crosby sound-bite where Sid intimated disdain for Ovechkin's goal celebrations, Don Cherry went after Ovechkin for acting like a soccer player and then compared his celebration "act" to Sean Avery-like behavior. So, here's the two-part question: 1) Is Crosby a hypocrite for making his remarks regarding Ovechkin just ONE DAY AFTER he himself jumped to the glass versus the Flyers in celebration of a goal, a la Ovechkin? 2) Do you agree with Cherry that goal celebration should be contained to a raised stick and that anything beyond that is inappropriate or are these displays of emotion/personality good for fans and good for the game? Justin, Pierre Turgeon got clocked by Dale Hunter after scoring a goal. He didn't even have a chance to raise his stick before getting steamrolled so, if a guy's gonna hate, he's gonna hate. Does excessive celebration incite more aggressive behavior? Maybe, but if the alternative is to watch a bunch of emotionless robots, I'll gladly take what Cherry defines as "hot dogging". VIP, I recently watched a 12u girl's hockey match where one of the gals completed a hat trick on the 10th goal, in a 10-1 game. She proceeded to take one glove off to wave 3 fingers at the crowd. That one got a 'wow' from me on SO many levels... VIP, her coach sat the hot dog's rear on the bench for the rest of the game. She was a gold-medal Olympian and was embarrassed beyond words by the antics of her player. That didn't stop me from greeting the coach with three-finger waves for a week or two, though. Bob, out-STANDING! Cherry type that himself or did he dictate from the set between wardrobe changes? Erica, I guess multiple outlets captured the quote out of context. I read those same comments in reference to the celebration and thought Cherry was showing the very clip I had read about earlier in the week. Might Crosby be using "like it or lump it" in all of his answers? Maybe he has a running bet going with his teammates. You know, like "how many times can you sneak the word "meow" into a conversation? You're right, though, if he WAS referencing taunting, then screw him. Whining is the stupid person's version of taunting as far as I'm concerned. If you don't have the wit or imagination to be a smart-ass, you cry... I hope you realize that I was pulling your chain right there. Yes, I like to taunt but, at this point, I'm just deeply saddened that I have asked a question that has upset you. No, that wasn't a continuation of the grand taunt. That was me doing sincere. I'm just glad we can both agree that Don Cherry is a complete blowhard. The SC87 dispute begs further debate...
Cal Clutterbuck the Buttercup? Last night he scored an empty net goal and had an excessive celebration that included skating by the Preds bench and taunting them. My Q- On tonight's "Coach's Corner" will Don Cherry really give this Russian visor wearing twerp a good tongue lashing? Assuming his program agenda isn't already set and knowing how he only trashes on the Russians. Cdn Fan- Don goes after Canadian boys too........looked for the article.......and even found the vid...LOL http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2009/02/02/don-cherry-lays-into-cal-clutterbuck/ @ about the 4:40 mark
Is Sidney Crosby a class act? No matter how many people try to lure him into telling them where to go, he just doesn't bite. Mature beyond his years. I would have told Don Cherry to bite me years ago.......Sid just smiles and says how much he enjoyed Coach's corner as a kid. There's the whole Semin thing....if I was Crosby and he called me out, I'd be lighting him up through the media, everything from "what has he won?" to his "trips to the IR" to his peculiar name......but nope, Sid won't bite. Bigger man than most. FROM AN ARTICLE TODAY...... "Coincidentally or not, Crosby has gotten hot since the Capitals’ Alexander Semin called him overrated, a player whose production has never matched his hype. “What’s so special about Sidney Crosby? I don’t see anything special there,” Semin said last month. “If you take any player, even if he is dead wood, and start promoting him, you’ll get a star.” The criticism seemed curious given that Crosby scored more points (102) at a younger age than any player in league history in 2005-06, won the scoring title a season later at 19, then returned from a major ankle injury to lead Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup finals last season. Crosby wouldn’t say whether Semin’s comments motivated him. Maybe he didn’t have to. “I don’t think I really have to defend myself with words,” Crosby said. “I play the game and play the way I feel I have to, the way I feel is the right way. If that’s not up to someone’s standards, that’s fine. If they feel like they have to have their opinion heard, that’s fine, too. But, you know, that’s not really the way I go about it.” People like to compare one generation's stars to the next generation's stars.........of course there is only one Bobby Orr or Mario Lemeiux BUT it is this part of Sidney's persona, not his game or his skills but his class that makes him the closest thing to Wayne Gretzky.........since Wayne Gretzky. Polski....I tend to disagree that 99% of athletes are class acts, especially these days......EVERY single day........they grace the headlines with their stupidity. How surprised would you be to hear that Gretzky spit beer at some girl in a bar or shot himself by accident? Or Crosby? I'm Just Me........So, why do you think the NHL promotes him? BECAUSE HE SELLS....it's what people want.......besides, that is his fault how? The penalty stuff is nonsense.....I have never seen a player get hacked so much.......and I'm a Flyers fan.....can't stand the little bastard. LOL Spaceboy.....never saw that video before, the coach it shows is a friend of mine, Brad Crossley........his DAUGHTER Alexis made the Bantam AAA Boys team last year and this year she has gone down to Minnesota to play on the Under 16 Girls team at Shattuck St. Mary's (same school Sidney went too...and many others.....J.P Parise is the athletic director)........she is the youngest player on the team and holding her own. http://www.s-sm.org/ftpimages/131/download/download_group9682_id348026.xls #5........Alexis Crossley WEAPON X.....he is a cute little girl. LOL Homes.....I'm a little older than Sid and I can assure you that I would have lost it........I think Semin's comments are more of normal young buck chatter...not thinking before you speak......no doubt, Crosby is in the limelight........as Spaceboy's video shows, the media have been watching his every move for 10 years.....he is just classy......nothing to do with him being a hometowner.......I'd say the same if he was an American........in fact, I think someone like Parise is pretty classy..........but he isn't under constant scrutiny........some would snap under that pressure. Me, a homer? LMAO.....you know better, I sould tear you a new one and I would if you weren't my #1 c-o-u-n-t. Gretzky is from Ontario........I always felt the same way about HIM!! Mario? Not so much. Not as classy. How do you explain that? Orcelina....just posted that^^^^ and then read your post........Mario might have helped a bit, hard to imagine it hurting but Sid was like that pre Mario......I think his parents prepared him moreso. Besides, I think Mario was kind of spoiled and not a great ambassador for the game. He did selfish things throughout his career.
Anyone wanna talk about Sid's injury? Come on Sid, bend those knees when you are coasting into the boards, don't go feet first while looking around to see where the puck is going. I guess he hasn't spent enough time on his butt to know this golden rule. He'll know better next time. Seriously though kids.....never lead with your feet. I can hear Don Cherry tonight already. Also, who wants to make a wager that he talks about the Steve Downie/Bobby Clarke hooplah and the Toronto Maple Leaf's Management situation. Probably shows the Nash goal, after all Nash is a Toronto resident. There you go, you don't even have to watch Coach's corner, I just gave you the recap. DJ and Dubbs- IT IS SUBJECTIVE BUT I think Nash's goal was better for sure. I'm hearing alot of analysts opine that is was the best they have seen in 2 years. They interviewed a bunch of players on Sportscenter, they all thought it was better too. Besides, it is a matter of opinion and I am just saying I think it was the best and that Cherry will show it. P.S. Toews is Canadian too. QBall- The guys on TSN? Glenn Healy said it and you don't want to know what I think about Healy.
Can you answer these questions about Ovechkin's 50th celebration goal in the news....(more below)? Beating the dead horse…..I know. Just bored and uncreative today and looking for opinions. 1.The Canadian Press reported, Ovechkin was quoted saying, “If somebody (doesn't) like it, don't watch my game, don't watch what I'm doing on the ice.” When I was in a band (before I became an old dork), we had this unspoken rule. When talking to somebody never say things like, “Well, me and MY band…” or “MY band is playing there is weekend.” I suppose this is because we thought it was VERY egotistical to talk as if you possessed the band. A band and a team can’t be made by one person. Do you think Ovie was just talking in a poor English Russian accent way OR do you think he is an egotistical pig? 2.The Washington Post reported, “Every game night Alex Ovechkin and several teammates kick a soccer ball around outside the dressing room as a way of loosening up. Tonight was no different. Except Ovechkin wasn't wearing his usual red Caps underwear. He was wearing a red "Coach's Corner" t-shirt and Hockey Night in Canada boxer shorts -- and a big smile. On the back of the t-shirt, someone had written the word "respect." Do you think Cherry is going to ignore this statement OR bring it up on the next Coach’s Corner? 3.ESPN reported, Lightning’s coach Rick Tocchet said "I grew up in the old days in the Spectrum where in the first period, after that happened, it might have been a three-hour first period. It's not something I like. It's hard for me to see that in our building." What does he mean by 3 hour 1st period? Does he mean fighting? This totally blew over my head. I swear I need a drink….I keep forgetting to get beer on the way home from work. 4.All reports mention that Mike Green was asked by A.O. to join in the “staged” celebration when happened. Green decided not to join in the celebration. Smart move by him. Should we give Green some props for having good judgment? 5.Cherry also felt it was disrespectful to the Lightning. I was not really feeling that because Alex has the maturity of people that actually laugh at Jim Carey movies. Does his celebration decision have to do with maturity? Sorry so long. Most of these are just quotes....feel free to skim read. :) Leafsfan: I was a drummer in a few punk bands. I was never really that good.....but I really didn't have to be, because the monkey beat was all that was really necessary. It was never really my passion. I am offended you would associate me with some crappy college music, lol. Dale: I hear ya. I am pretty immature sometimes, as well. Jay: Maturation…….almost sounds naughty…..see there is my maturity. SportAnimial: Yep, TO has an ego. John: Whoa….I didn’t know Cherry was your sore spot. To each his own. Leafsfan: LMAO…..I had not even read your entire answer yet. I did one of those laughs where somehow you snort. Glad I am not drinking beer yet…that might have burned.
What did you think of Cherry's blow-up on Coach's Corner tonight? On HNIC I think he lost it. LITY I definitely have to disagree. I am a first nations member and live in a military community. I am embarrassed on both counts. #2 It wasn't the discussion about Simon's suspensions that upset me. It was his antics when he didn't think Maclean had a point about possible mistreatment on Chris Simon because of his racial background. My anger peaked when he wouldn't accept a possibility that the NHL might have some discrimination issues. My embarrassment increased when with his flag waving for his show on the backs of my friends in Khandahar (I have 15 friends over there). They love the support but crocodile tears and false "love ya boys" are a little tough to take.
Anyone see Coach's corner tonight?? I regretfully agree with Cherry on one thing. As I have posted earlier this week, Colin Campbell is out of his mind. He says fighters are bigger and stronger and would basically get destroyed by today's fighters. I posted that they could hold their own. Cherry ranted about that tonight. Also, he showed that old clip where he wore the earring and I had forgot all about that clip. How politically incorrect is that these days?? I can hear the gay pride now. Heck, if they thought that snickers Super Bowl ad was bad. Also loved the clip of a Sabre and Sen fighting and Campbell and Preissing are standing arm in arm watching the fight. Wasan't that special! Also, while I know the AVERAGE NHL player is bigger and training has improved, because we are further along does not mean better. I also know that it is hard/impossible to compare sport's eras but if you look at some sports, the athletes seemed better in certain eras without a doubt. Heavyweight boxing comes to mind incidentally, how far down has that gone?? I'll take Ali over anyone in today's class. Just like I'd take Probert against anyone from today's NHL.
Discretion or zero-tolerance? I was watching Coach's Corner last night and Cherry brought up a point on players crashing the net nowadays. A lot of stuff he said I couldn't remember (like it was common practice before), but one point that stood out for me is that refs have no discretion anymore. I've also asked a question on no-intent penalties before, and a few people brought up good points. For example, one of the penalties I found ridiculous was the offensive player crossed left and stepped on a defensive player's skate and that was tripping penalty. So what do you think? Should refs use more discretion in their calls or should it be enforced regardless of intent?

>>>>** WWE SMACKDOWN! SPOILER's** Smackdown Tapings: 1) Mark Henry def. Kane, Chuck Palumbo, and The Great Khali in a 4 man battle royal. Chavo Guerrero is introduced at the start of the show and does guest commentary. Match itself is rather short. Kane is eliminated first and followed by Chuck Palumbo (both by Khali, I believe.) Henry and Khali trade chops and punches for a bit, then Henry lifts up Khali for a body slam and throws him over the top rope. Henry receives a face pop for his disposing of Khali. Chavo sneaks into the ring after the match and takes out Henry at the knees. He works on him for a bit before Henry comes back and gives Chavo a bodyslam and splash. Teddy Long is backstage with Eve, Cherry, and Michelle McCool. He announces that Eve has been eliminated from the Diva competition. Maryse and Victoria show up and start arguing with everyone. Teddy says the only way to settle this is with a ‘Diva Super Soaker/Water Balloon Tag Match’ or whatever the hell he called it. Yikes. Promos are shown throughout the night for Edge’s funeral ceremony to commemorate the ending of Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak. 2) CM Punk def. John Morrison This was a solid match that was given about 10 minutes and was similar to their summer matches for the ECW title. The highlight was Punk giving Morrison a frakensteiner off the top rope. Finish comes when Punk reversed Morrison’s corkscrew neckbreaker finish into the GTS. 3) Jesse, Festus, and Kofi Kingston def. Lance Cade, Trevor Murdoch, and the Miz The heels work over Jesse until he makes the hot tag. Everybody is on the outside brawling when Kofi hits a spinning roundhouse kick on (I think) the Miz for the pin. 4) Batista def. Snitsky Spear. Spinebuster. Batista Bomb. Pin. Match lasted 60 seconds tops and was a total squash. Batista grabs a chair after the match and gives Snitsky another powerbomb on the chair. 5) Michelle McCool and Cherry def. Victoria and Maryse w/ Eve as special referee in the ‘Diva Super Soaker/Water Balloon Tag Match’ This was basically soft-core porn. Buckets of water and water balloons are in each corner with super soaker guns. Victoria had the humorous moment when she came out with goggles, a snorkel, and those toddler arm floaters. They throw balloons around for a bit and end up hitting Coach, Michael Cole, and even a few made it into the front rows. McCool hits some type of suplex on Victoria for the pin. Maryse looked like a girl who’s been hysterically crying because all of her eyeliner was streaking down her face. Eve poured a bucket of water over her after the match to top it all off. They went with this instead of getting Flair on TV one last time? Please. 6) Chris Jericho def. MVP via DQ There’s a bit of a delay while the ring crew switches out the mats. MVP comes out while the ring is still being switched and he gets on the mic and works the crowd for a few minutes. He also walks over to the announce table and mouths off and berates Michael Cole. I doubt that will air, however. This was another enjoyable match. Jericho seems to be finally finding his stride again and MVP’s potential is through the roof. Jericho reverses a Playmaker attempt into the Walls of Jericho and MVP is able to escape and scurry out the ring. He grabs the belts and runs into the ring to get DQ’ed. Jericho ducks the hit and gives MVP the Codebreaker on the US title. 7) Funeral Ceremony The ring is set up with full funeral arrangement garb and resembles a wake. The black flowers and wreaths are present, along with a picture of the Undertaker and a podium for Edge to speak. A casket is in the middle of the ring. Edge and his entire posse are present in formal attire. Edge gives a eulogy on the Undertaker, covers his accomplishments, and lists his Wrestlemania opponents. He comments on how that time has now come to an end. Vickie interrupts and says she has a gift for Edge. It’s a video in the style of a movie preview promoting Edge as a superhero for conquering the Undertaker. When Edge starts a final prayer, the lights go dark and Undertaker’s music and video plays. The casket opens and Taker ambushes Edge. He assaults him in the corner until Edge is able to escape. The tapings end with Taker posing in the middle of the ring. Note: Someone screwed up during this segment and really exposed the product. When the lights dropped and the music/video started, it seemed to go on longer that what you’d normally expect. One of the producers who had been outside on the corner ring steps for the entire segment then literally jumped onto the apron and banged on the back of the casket in plain sight. He hopped back down and the casket opened. I was just a few feet away from this since I was sitting 3rd row floor on the TV side. All of us in the area looked at each other literally dumbfounded since it was painfully obvious. I understand this type of segment isn’t necessarily ‘believable’ to begin with and it’s nothing that will show on TV, but it kills any type of suspension of disbelief that the crowd needs to have to be fully invested with the product. I can’t possibly believe that’s how it was designed in the first place. It definitely looked amateurish. 8) Dark Match: Ric Flair, Batista, and the Undertaker def. Edge, the Big Show, and MVP The crew clears the ring again and everyone comes out for the dark match. This match was fun and resembled what you’d see at a house show. The heels stalled and argued with each other throughout. Flair and MVP started the match off, and the heels worked over Undertaker for most of the match. Finish comes when all six men are fighting and Taker simultaneously hits a tombstone on Edge while Flair gets MVP to submit to the Figure Four. Post match, the faces are in the ring celebrating for several minutes. Batista grabs the mic and thanks Flair for being a friend and an integral part of his professional and personal life. Flair speaks and thanks Fayetteville for supporting him throughout his career. He says that if this Sunday is truly the end of the line, he’s glad to have performed here one last time. Taker doesn’t speak but embraces Flair and motions to him. All three walk out together to end the show.
How do I end this story? Now my problem is how to end this story...I am assigned to end this story and my mind is in a blur right now and I can't think of anything to make a beautiful ending..I need some ideas...now the story goes like this: Little Red Riding Hood: (sings while picking flowers) lalalalalalalala…. Big Bad Wolf: (hiding behind the tree) Hehehe dinner is about to be served…. (Approaches Little Red Riding Hood) Hi there little girl! What are you picking flowers for? Little Red Riding Hood: I’m going to visit my granny today mister. Big Bad Wolf: Oh I see. Now ain’t that sweet. What are you visiting your granny for little girl? Little Red Riding Hood: My granny has been sick; I’m bringing her some medicine. How about you mister, what are you doing around here? Big Bad Wolf: (gulps) Well um, err.. I’m here to.. Uh.. I’m going to.. uhm.. I’m going to visit my granma too.. Yeah, that’s what I’m here for. Little Red Riding Hood: Oh really? Aren’t you gonna pick flowers for your granny too eh mister? Big Bad Wolf: Yeah right, I forgot, I completely forgot. Hehe thanks for reminding me little girl. (starts picking flowers) Little Red Riding Hood: No problem mister! You better hurry up picking those flowers for your granny, it’s going to get dark soon. Big Bad Wolf: Yeah, dark, soon.. (laughs) almost time for dinner. Do you know what I’m having for dinner? Little Red Riding Hood: Yum.. What mister? I haven’t got a clue. Big Bad Wolf: I’ll be having something sweet, something little, something red. (laughs) Little Red Riding Hood: Hmmm… Would that be an apple? Big Bad Wolf: (Slowly approaching Little Red Riding Hood cornering her) No, guess again little girl.
